A day in the life: Julie and Toni

Continuing our look at how members of our team spend their working days, we talked to our Dispensing Opticians.

Julie Dove and Toni Hopkins are both Fellows of the Association of British Dispensing Opticians. They work in our practices in Long Eaton and Loughborough and their role is to advise patients on the best eyewear for their needs, following their comprehensive eye examination.

Julie said: “The day starts with a full team brief to discuss the day’s clinic so all members are aware of what is in store for the day ahead. Following the brief, the main part of the day is spent consulting with patients, first asking about their lifestyle to find out what sort of eyewear will suit their everyday life and their hobbies.

After this we start selecting frames suited to the patient’s face shape and colouring. We then advise the best lens options to meet their visual needs, considering the lens materials and coatings.”

Toni explained: “We have time booked during the day to check the completed spectacles that have come in from the lens laboratory, to make sure they are the correct prescription and all the measurements are set up as we have asked for.

During the day we also have appointments for fitting new spectacles, adjustments, additional dispenses and repairs. As Dispensing Opticians, we have the responsibility of selecting the frame ranges to have in stock, so we regularly see the representatives of the different frame manufacturers.

At the end of the day we make sure we have ordered all the spectacles dispensed during that day, to ensure they are ready for the patient as quickly as possible.”

“We both find being Dispensing Opticians very enjoyable and are privileged to be able to help patients in this very personal experience.”

At the end of each busy day, how does Toni relax? “I am an Ambassador for the NSPCC and official Honorary Council member,” says Toni. “I also love gardening and baking with my children”.
