Focusing on Sun Safety

Sunglasses are key to protecting your eyes from sun-related damage and it's never to early too start thinking about them. Too much sun exposure can cause a number of eye-related diseases such as cataracts, Macular Degeneration and eye cancers.

Therefore sunglasses should be worn anytime you are outdoors, particularly under these circumstances:

  • During the summer, when the level of UV radiation is three times higher than during winter
  • When at the beach or in the water;
  • When participating in winter sports, especially at high altitudes;
  • When using medications that can cause sensitivity to light (photosensitivity)

Many parents are careful about spreading sun cream on their children's skin on sunny days, which is rightly so, but what often gets overlooked is damage to young eyes. In fact, eye protection for children is even more vital than adults, due to their intra-ocular lenses being so clear and pupils larger than compared to adults, allowing more light into to the eye.

Fact: In children, it is estimated that at least 50% of their lifetime sun exposure will have happened by the time they reach 18 years old!

So there is never a better time to get UV blocking sunglasses for your children. If you want to know more on the matter, ask our Optometrist or Dispensing Optician and they will be more than happy to help.
